I've noticed that most nights as I'm turning off the lights and heading for bed "City Girl" starts playing in my head. I think my mind is connecting the end of the day with the end of the movie.

I love the smell of cherry blossoms in the morning

Apocalypse Now and Lost In Translation....eerie similarities....striking parallels....unexpected juxtapositions.... Francis Ford Coppola wanted to set "Heart of Darkness" during the Vietnam War. Sofia Coppola decided to set the story in contemporary Japan. Coppola had to lobby President Marcos to le...

Have you seen the Babel book in your local book store? http://www.taschen.com/pages/en/catalogue/books/film/new/facts/01376.htm The Tokyo section has some photos that'll be familiar to any LIT fan: scenes from a dance club, night shots of the city. At 304 pages it's about twice as long as the Making...

Here are some shots of Tokyo published in the current issue of "125 Magazine". The photographer took these photos from different hotels he's stayed at. The third and fourth photos on the top row were taken from the Park Hyatt.

R doc on J pop

I recently caught a radio documentary about Japanese pop culture. It focused mostly on the global popularity of manga and anime. A nice surprise: at least three titles from the LIT soundtrack were included as background music. The doc. is titled "Japan's Pop Power" Find out more here http://american...

LIT inspired photos?

Here are a couple of photos that maybe, possibly, could have been inspired by the movie. Charlotte in the pink wig? Supermodel Natalia Vodianova in the Sept. '06 issue of "W" magazine. This picture was taken by Craig McDean who also photographed Sofia for the Sept. '06 issue of "Vanity Fair". http:/...

Another subtle touch. The first night they go out Charlotte dresses up, Bob wears the T-shirt. The next night he puts on a dress shirt but she goes casual. Both trying to dress appropriately for each other but not getting it quite right. Their sartorial mismatch could be Sofia's sly comment on the o...

Charlotte also fiddles with her wedding ring while lying next to Bob. But in this case I think it's to remind herself that she's married. In the next sequence on the train she rests her arm on the window sill, her ring very close to the camera. Maybe communicating that she's still committed to her m...

Bob and charlotte in Esquire

Take a look at the June issue of Esquire magazine, Tom Hanks is barbecuing on the cover. On page 122 there's a short piece about hotel bars, I think you'll like the accompanying photo. Also check out the Wittnauer watch ad on page 75 of the same issue. Is that Scarlett? No moles on her cheek, but st...

There's a coffee table book published recently titled "Luxury Hotels:Asia/Pacific". It includes a couple of pages on the Park Hyatt. Among the photos is a nighttime shot of the pool. Even more sexual imagery: 2 for the price of 1! John and Charlotte are at the table with Kelly and her boyfriend. Bob slowly takes a sip from the whiskey glass and glances up at Charlotte, she's looking back at him and takes a drag on her cigarette.

LIT has had a profound effect on me and yet I never cried any of the times I went to see it. Those 102 minutes in the theatre were like an opium dream, I felt like I was floating in a different conscious state. It was at other times: lying in bed unable to sleep, or at the music store listening to t...

I believe in some interview Sofia said she wanted the film to feel like a memory. When looking back on some vivid experience in your life, your grasp of the sequence of events may not be as accurate as you remember. With her editor Sarah Flack she may have decided to play around with the timeline in...

LIT screenplay--en francais

If you are anywhere near a university, you might want to inquire if any of the campus libraries subscribe to a film journal titled "L'AVANT-SCENE CINEMA". The April issue (no:541) features the entire script in French, with several screen captures from the movie interspersed throughout the text. It's...
