I don't think I can paste the text of the article comparing LiT and Roman Holiday here...but it's quite a good one. I've got it in pdf format and would be willing to email it to forum members if you PM me first.

There is actually a scholarly article that I came across in my studies which compares these two films. I will try to copy the full text here... Also, I don't feel that Jimmy Stewart was too old for his role in Rear Window; I think his pairing with Grace Kelly (a Hitchcock favorite to say the least) ...

Look for the posts (I think in the thread "I can't stop thinking about Lost in Translation") that describe the punch in the stomach feeling...

I have that.

Thanks so much for these replies. I really appreciate the sharing. Of what's been mentioned, I already know and love Sigur Ros; I'll have to check out some of the other artists you mentioned.

Soundtrack contributors' other work

Of the artists represented on the LiT soundtrack, I only knew the work of Kevin Shields/My Bloody Valentine and Air prior to getting interested in the film. A week or two ago, I bought the most recent album by Phoenix ("It's Never Been Like That") based on liking "Too Young" in the night out sequenc...

Thanks for the reply, jml98. I think my friend and I might be taking a day trip over to Kyoto or Osaka, so some extra expenses will likely be incurred there. But I'll be prepared! (Also, though my friend has seen and enjoyed LiT, he's certainly not nearly the fanatic that I've become. That said, I'l...

Brilliantly biting song by CAKE (with, of course, a scathing trumpet line). To me Coming from you Friend is a four-letter word. End is the only part of the word that I heard. Call me morbid or absurd, But to me Coming from you Friend is a four-letter word. When I go fishing for the words I am wishin...

Thanks so much for these updates! I'm going to Tokyo later this summer, and I'm ridiculously excited. (My first time...) I'll be going with two old friends of mine, one of whom is Japanese (born and raised in the States, though). This friend will be with his family for a big reunion most of the time...

It sounds to me as if she were singing an octave higher than what would be her normal register. If you've heard her sing elsewhere (recent SNL, e.g.), you'll notice that her singing voice--like her speaking voice--is decidedly lower than what we're hearing in this "Just Like Honey" Youtube video. Ba...

Last movie I saw: Spider-Man 3 (twice so far). Now, it's obviously a different type of film than LiT, but this trilogy of films is so well crafted both visually and dramaturgically. I'd highly recommend it.

I actually just wrote a final paper for my film class on Ghost World--specifically on the different modes of artistry represented in the film and their uses. If anyone's interested in reading, send me a PM; I don't want to just post the whole thing here.

I have wondered about this too. I've never been able to find "Goodbye" in the film even with the volume cranked.

It's not a story, per se. It's just that I know the Kurosawa film "Dreams" very well, and this moment of Scarlett watching the procession in Kyoto was such a direct visual reference to it that I started thinking about what the thematic connections might be. Plus, we know that Sophia knows a great de...

Another small detail that I noticed in the moment just before the one I wrote about above. Just before Bob shaves with that small razor (and subsequently interrupted by the phone call from the hotel about the fax), we see him looking in the mirror. For the first instant we see him, his eyes are clos...

Thanks for the reply, Pitman. Those were some great points. What you wrote made me think a bit more about the nature of photos, and, while I agree with what you said about photography as a means of capturing a moment and helping us to treasure and hold on to those truly fine times, I also think phot...

Meta-photography

I watched LiT again today, and I started thinking about the role that photography plays within the narrative of the film. I haven't drawn any conclusions about these elements yet--I guess I'm still just finding different bits of related content. Maybe after listing these moments here, someone will h...

I've got a question about another "subtle observation" issue. In the short scene in which Bob is shaving (when he receives a phone call saying he's got a fax), he shaves with an unusually small razor. This, I think, is a reference to the film North by Northwest--Cary Grant's character in that film h...

Re: Alarm

Again, another first for observations....when Charlotte calls her sister, Lauren, about how she is feeling, there is the background of Tokyo, and there's an alarm in the background. I have never observed this, and thought it was really interesting....a coincidence, or actually very well planned tha...
