I think LiT actually taps into a much larger, and much more common void; the feeling you have when someone important to you is gone from your life forever, and you don't get the opportunity to properly say goodbye to them. Sometimes, it's something as mundane as leaving for another job. Sometimes, i...

I haven't said much about my relationship with my "Charlotte", partly because the details aren't particularly interesting to anyone but myself, and partly out of respect for her. But I will share this. I met Charlotte when I was still single, and very young. She was several years older than me, had ...

And while I said Bob could tell Lydia, maybe I'm wrong. I now remember my wife seriously wondering if an emotional connection was actually tougher to accept than a "normal" affair. I believe that. While a "normal" affair is sexually charged, exciting, etc, it is also temporary, and much easier to r...

I've just discovered a great Indian film called, "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge". I wouldn't compare it with LiT, but it is a wonderful film for us hopeless-romantic types. I've just started getting into Bollywood films, but this is the best one I've seen so far. The main characters go exploring Europ...

Oooooh yeah ! I have to admit, I haven't liked anything much that he's done since 1985, but everything up till then is good. I even like the albums I'm not "supposed" to: Punch the Clock and Goodbye Cruel World. The latter is a bad album, but "Not the Only Flame in Town" and "Room Without A Number" ...

I thought Magnolia was a bit too ambitious and stumbled at the very last hurdle. It doesn't have the amount of power LiT has. I agree. While a couple of Magnolia's stories worked well (the Jason Robards and Tom Cruise threads, notably), the others seemed contrived, unrealistic or simply uninvolving...

When i hear "Just Like Honey", i think of the inaudible whisper and Bob and Charotte's faces after realizing that they'll never see each other again. I recall the feeling that "Just Like Honey" had been redefined to me, as I first watched LiT. I had spent my teen years listening to the song, but it...

Sign up and make yourself known, guest. We have a great deal in common, although I have you beat by 2 years, and both of us were married. I never went beyond the "awkward hug" phase, and reaching that seemed a pinnacle, of sorts. I think I inadvertently ended the friendship by sending her an email t...

I'm sorry, but I don't buy the "Lolita"-reference theory. I have questioned the use of this as the opening shot, as well, of course. I linked it in my mind with the shot of Mt. Fuji in the background while Bob is playing golf, about halfway through the film. It's not the central object that makes th...

Having experienced both in my life, I am happy to report that there is a difference between having an alcohol-fueled tryst with someone fun in a far-away city, and having a chance-encounter with your soulmate. There was a basic respect for Charlotte that called for Bob to not push the relationship t...
