i saw the fountain recently. made my charlotte cry. me too, almost *sniff...i really liked that idea of the doctor who is so busy trying to save his terminally ill wife he cant find the time to just take a walk with her in the snow. it was panned when it came out, and i have no idea why. has anyone else seen it, and would care to tell me their ideas on actually happened? there are tangents at the end that are just kerazy, in that david lynch way. anyway, highly recommended.

It was Darren Aronofsky (pi, Requiem for a Dream) that wrote/directed, not David Lynch.

Anyway, when I saw this movie with a large group of my friends everyone of them hated it, with comments ranging from 'trite and cliche' to 'best comedy of the year'.

I rather liked it though. Visually and aurally it was amazing. I found myself interested (if not captivated) by the three interconnected storylines. And I love Rachel Weisz. It's worth renting/watching for those reasons alone.

But I will agree with my friends that it goes a little over the top with the metaphors and cliches (I mean, he does literally 'push up daisies' at one point).

And it wasn't as good as I was expecting based on the preview (which made it seem more sci-fi than it actually was) and Aronofsky's previous work.

lol oh sorry, i was just referencing david lynch cos he makes the type of weird movies i like...my bad, i should learn to elucidate myself properly! and yes, i have to admit, it was very heavy on metaphors (altho to be fair you could accuse sideways of being one big wine metaphor, and sideways was all the better for it) and wasnt as good as the prequel suggested, but i appreciated the acting from hugh jackman and rachel weisz, who was luminous, and the three storylines were tied together quite well (altho they could have been a bit more ambiguous with the 16th century one with regards to its relation to the rest of the film). but there are moments in that film with real power.

the one that made my charlotte cry was after the funeral when he is sitting on the bed and makes the tattoo on his ring finger. and the scene that is repeated, where rachel asks hugh to go for a walk with her, builds in power every time until it becomes unbearably tragic, in my eyes. i love the central concept of the film, maybe a little too much.

i would definitely agree, the film is quite deeply flawed, but i think the fundamental core of the movie is solid, and even though i think aronofsky could improve on it (the ending just goes on and on), there are periods and moments in the film that actually elicit an emotional response, and thats more than can be said for most films anywhere. and i think, that even includes requiem for a dream, which i felt to be too contrived to convince. still love it as a film, but even fables dont tie up that neatly
