Last Life in the Universe

Has anyone here seen this gem of a movie? From Thailand, directed by Pen-Ek Ratanaruang, starring Tadanobu Asano (Japan's Johnny Depp).

Two people are drawn together through circumstances beyond their control. The ending is ambiguous. One of my favourite movies.

Tadanobu also stars in the very violent flick Ichi The Killer. Interestingly enough, the director of that movie, Takashi Miike, has a cameo in Last Life, and there is a poster for Ichi in the library as well.

I'd been looking for this for a while but it wasn't under the foreign section at the video place - it was under independent. I found it while looking for something else in the indie section and recognized the cover shot.

There were times where the dialogue made me scratch my head, but that could have just been translation issues from Thai and Japanese to English. Also, I couldn't really get into the characters...I just didn't care about them enough by the end. Still, it did have its touching moments and was well directed I thought - worth the rental price. :)

*spoiler alert*
Well now, that's what we are led to believe. But if that's the case, why is the very last scene of him in the police station under arrest?

Very curious.

Hmm.. well, Christmas is not too far away...

If I'm going to send you some movies this year, you can bet this one will be in the mix.
