The Whisper.. "supposedly" revealed
Moderator: Bob
Certainly does. Unfortunately for me, that means almost no one I know actually likes it, or appreciates it. On the other hand though, it's a personal thing really, and it wouldn't be the same if everyone I knew liked it, and for the same reasons.Pockets wrote:I just wanted to add that LiT is like the Mona Lisa painting. There are so many ways to appreciate it and the artwork speaks differently to each viewer.

You know, both of them were unhappy in their respective marriages. Perhaps finding each other made them not only more aware of this, but forced them to resolve their respective situations. So, it's not that Bob is going back home to be a better husband to a nagging wife...or Charlotte to be a better wife to an absent husband...it's about Bob and Charlotte waking up in their respective lives to actually do something about it. Meaning, moving on with their own lives. Waking up to the fact, the reality that they are not happy, in fact, miserable in their respective lives. Finding each other has made them awaken to a deeper reality. They no longer feel they have to be locked into a marital situation anymore. They can both break free from it now.Otherwise, in the short whisper scene, I don't see how Bob and Charlotte would have arranged to contact each other later on in the States without their spouses getting involved. The whisper was some sort of farewell and closure. To say that he loved her, would have given Charlotte false hope of a future together, interfered with her current state of matrimony and made their encounter less special imo.
The whisper is the extension of continued support. Whether the relationship becomes sexual or not, who is to tell. For sure there was sexual tension between them. So, for sure it's a possibility. However, that's not really the point, or the issue here. It was more the point that two people find each other in a chaotic and lonely world, and share something very special. Now, they can go back to their unhappy lives and never see each other again, as it was turning out from the lobby departure; or they can leave knowing that their special connection is secure and will continue. All is not over. They can actually talk again. This is why the whisper made them both so happy. Especially for Charlotte. She was the one who first expressed disappointment in how Bob was leaving it in the lobby, she was looking for more. She wasn't looking for advice at that point, no way. She was looking for a continued connection. It's quite obvious.
We all know I'm right anyway.
I think that with movies of quality, I enjoy watching them the first time by myself. There are some things best savored alone and after the movie, I can dwell on the details in peace and without the input of others. If I really like the film, I will rewatch it again in the company of select friends.Bren wrote:Certainly does. And this quote from the movie XX/XY comes to mind:
"It’s okay, I got rid of him. It was only a matter of time. The first time we hung out... and we went to a movie. Just hearing when he laughed, I could tell it wouldn’t last." - Sam to Coles ten years later in regards to dating Thomas, a guy many years her junior.
Yeah, same for me. Where it differs for me though is that watching it with others has proved to be a bad idea, because it never has the same effect. Also, for me, time and place is important as to trully appreciate the film and really 'connect' with it, in the way that makes it so special to watch.Pockets wrote: I think that with movies of quality, I enjoy watching them the first time by myself. The phone call scene in 'Swingers' is the funniest thing I've ever seen...watching it with others (especially,it must be said, people of the female persuasion),I end up being the only one laughing.Bren wrote:

Each to his own,eh?
Learning the content of the whisper never meant much to me. I think it is interesting that it has such a legendary place in the movie. If the movie had not been so good I might have wanted to know what Bob said, but the ending is so good that the whisper is small potatoes to me.
