Scarlett in The Island

#1 Post by Suntory » Tue Jul 05, 2005 12:58 am

I have seen previews for this and am really looking forward to it.
I would guess the average review will be two stars but who cares?!
It's got Ewan and Scarlett!!!

It looks to me like shades of Logan's Run and apparently it is a remake of
a 70's movie called The Clonus Horror:

It's interesting to note that the shot in the movie trailer of Scarlett seeing herself in an ad
for Calvin Klein in B&W just like in real life is no accident!!! Marketing
pervades everything.

I saw a long clip on ESPN on Sunday and it reminded me of the last "Matrix." I do wish Scarlett would ditch the blonde look, but I'm probably in the minority.

At this point in her life, she and her parents are probably doing their best to insure her financial security. I have no interest in seeing "The Island." I just don't watch movies like that unless I'm with someone who specifically wants to see it. I didn't like "In Good Company," and I didn't see "Girl With a Pearl Earring" because I read the book and felt I wouldn't like the movie.

When Scarlett is done with movies- whenever that may be- I hope she'll be remembered as an outstanding actress with some great movies under her belt and not as a flash in the pan starlet who fell in love with looking like Jean Harlow. I hope she'll do movies that I'll want to see in the theater.

Like others, I'm still coming to grips with the fact that Scarlett is not really Charlotte (just kidding - sort of.) The Charlotte character was devised to be someone a lot of men would like to know, and she played it perfectly.

I did have trouble with Scarlett being only 17 when LiT was filmed (given my daughter is also a teenager still). She did often look 17-18 to me - but again it may be because of my daughter is about that age (I just saw this a few months ago.) .But I do give her credit for staying away from the teenage sex comedies. With her (how should I say this?) physical maturity she could have been a natural in things like the Girl Next Door (I saw only about 30 minutes of that, enough to get the idea. Supposed to be a porn star wanting to be taken seriously. I have a hunch she was at least considered for that role.)

Even though she is still only 20 (I think) I can't see her ever doing roles her age. She does have a hard to describe "presence" in her interviews. Not giggly, but not overly serious. Very confident in herself.

I enjoyed "In Good Company", it's rare to see a movie about corporate life featuring a character with a functional family. The Alex character could have been played by anyone as far as I was concerned, that subplot only interested me in terms of how it affected the dynamic between the two male leads. Scarlett is starting to look so last week.

I finally got to see The Island today!!! It was AWESOME!!!!! :D

Of course this movie won't be for everyone here. I happen to like action
films and scifi films and when the two are put together and well done it's
great!

Even Roger Ebert liked it and gave it 3 stars!!!
http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbc ... 11003/1023

So if you like action films especially Michal Bay type films like The Rock
and Armegeddon then you will love this film! I enjoyed those films
(although I did not see Pearl Harbor or Bad Boy II although I kind of wanted
to see BBII!).
The thing is you can't take these films too seriously, they're just meant
to be fun. In fact the film even has a sense of humor about itself, putting
little references to other scifi flicks and tv here and there and sometimes
not so subtly. But I dont want to give anything away.
When I watch a film that is like this one, the question of whether it's
"good" or not depends on not just production values but the attitude as well.
The production, directing, lighting and editing etc is all very well done here
and I love seeing those clean and light, jumpsuited visions of the future.
The attititude is yes a lot is derivitive and the stuff of filmdom cliches but
it does them with style and a real sense of fun so you have fun watching it,
you don't sit there and groan oh no not again.
This film delivers what I really had wished Paycheck had, the last big
scifi action film I can recall coming out in the last year or two.

The first part of the film is 24 hours in the life of the clones in their environment.
You meet them and see how it all works and what's going on.
Then all hell breaks loose and the chase action stuff starts.
What's nice about the action is that Bay makes each sequence
megaout there and then moves on. There isn't a boring 15 minute
chase scene that goes on and on like Matrix Reloaded. In fact, quite
frankly, I'll take this film over the two Matrix sequals anyday! :P

At any rate what really works in the film I felt was the presense of
Ewon and Scarlett. The two are wonderful actors by themselves and
together and the supporting cast is great as well. The thing I liked
about seeing Charlotte....er um I mean Scarlett in this one is that it's
such a different role than I've seen her do before. First of course she's
grown and changed (but still HOT!) so there's that. But she really gets to
do a lot of fun stuff and a range of different emotions depending on
what's going on. From seeing LIT and Pearl you wouldn't figure her
for an action star but after seeing her in this I think she has real
potential to be one of the next hot action babes! Move over Garner
and Uma!!

I saw the sneak preview of The Island several weeks ago. In my mind it was very cliche and Hollywood despite starting with an interesting idea.

I'm dissapointed Scarlett seems to be going a very Hollywood route, but can't blame her, and just hope she makes some good films along her career.
I'm still lost...
