Sing me an Un-Love Song

#1 Post by I65 » Wed Nov 16, 2005 1:48 pm

The sequel. We all hate them. But like some movie mogul, I can't see what a success my "Sing me a Love Song" thread has been without trying to ride on it's coat tails. What is your favorite un-love song. It could be unrequited love, or love with the wrong person, or love that never was. Here's mine, from one of my top favorite albums of all time. This was my favorite song from the album, though I don't believe it ever got any airplay.

"Down Poison" ~ 3 Doors Down

I’ve dreamed about this,
Sixteen days away
Now you’re here,
And my head lays besides your body,
Pillowed under mine
You were poison,
Spinning round my mind
Welcome to my world
She said, do you feel
Alive she said
It’s all a bad dream,
Spinning in your lonely head,
Welcome to my world,
She said, separated world,
She said, separated,
Down poison,
Down poison,
Body withered,
Body died,
Time to take away this life
Bad enough to die from one,
Not to mention
Four or five
Welcome to my world
She said, do you feel alive she said
It’s all a bad dream,
Spinning in your lonely head
Welcome to my world she said,
Separated world,
She stayed separated
Down poison, down poison
Down poison, down
You weren’t there for me, I was there for you
You weren’t there for me, I was there for you
You weren’t there for me, I was there for you
You weren’t there for me, I was there for you
You wouldn’t die for me, I’ve died for you
You wouldn’t die for me, I’ve died for you
You wouldn’t die for me, I’ve already died for you
You wouldn’t die, you wouldn’t die, you wouldn’t die!
Welcome to my world she said, do
you feel alive she said
It’s all a bad dream,
Spinning in your lonely head
Welcome to my world she said,
Separated world, she stayed separated
Down poison, down poison
Down poison, down.

OK - I'll probably have a few to contribute to this. I'll start with one that's been swimming around in my head today; takes me back to my folk guitar playing days with a close friend I haven't seen in too many years.

Simon & Garfunkle - I Am a Rock

A winter's day
In a deep and dark December
I am alone
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow
I am a rock, I am an island

I've built walls
A fortress deep and mighty
That none may penetrate
I have no need for friendship, friendship causes pain
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain
I am a rock, I am an island

Don't talk of love
Well I've heard the word before
It's sleeping in my memory
I won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died
If I'd never loved, I never would have cried
I am a rock, I am an island

I have my books
And my poetry to protect me
I am shielded in my armor
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb
I touch no one and no one touches me
I am a rock, I am an island

And a rock feels no pain
And an island never cries

Yeah, "I Am a Rock" is a great tune. Here's one for you...it's actually played to light-hearted music, so it's not to be taken seriously. Procol Harum recorded it on their "Home" album.

Still There'll Be More

I'll bathe my eyes in a river of salt
I'll grow myself right up to the sky
I'll sing in the forest, tear down the trees
I'll foul all the fountains and trample the leaves
I'll blacken your Christmas and piss on your door
You'll cry out for mercy, but still there'll be more

I'll put a blight in the orchard
I'll run wild through the fields
I'll waylay your daughter and kidnap your wife
Savage her sexless and burn out her eyes
I'll blacken your Christmas and piss on your door
You'll cry out for mercy, but still there'll be more

Simon & Garfunkel...Procol Harum..ahh..the classics. :)

Here's another classic...Nazareth's Love Hurts :

Love hurts, love scars, love wounds
Almost, any heart
Not tough or strong enough
To take a lot of pain, take a lot of pain
Love is like a cloud
Holds a lot of rain
Love hurts......ooh, ooh love hurts

I'm young, I know, but even so
I know a thing or two
And I learned from you
I really learned a lot, really learned a lot
Love is like a flame
It burns you when it's hot
Love hurts......ooh, ooh love hurts

Some fools think of happiness
Blissfulness, togetherness
Some fools fool themselves I guess
They're not foolin' me

I know it isn't true, I know it isn't true
Love is just a lie
Made to make you blue
Love hurts......ooh, ooh love hurts
Ooh, ooh love hurts

3 good ones...

Bobby McGee ~ Janis

Busted flat in baton rouge, waiting for a train
And i’s feeling nearly as faded as my jeans.
Bobby thumbed a diesel down just before it rained,
It rode us all the way to new orleans.

I pulled my harpoon out of my dirty red bandanna,
I was playing soft while bobby sang the blues.
Windshield wipers slapping time, I was holding bobby’s hand in mine,
We sang every song that driver knew.

Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose,
Nothing don’t mean nothing honey if it ain’t free, now now.
And feeling good was easy, lord, when he sang the blues,
You know feeling good was good enough for me,
Good enough for me and my bobby mcgee.

From the kentucky coal mines to the california sun,
Hey, bobby shared the secrets of my soul.
Through all kinds of weather, through everything that we done,
Hey bobby baby kept me from the cold.

One day up near salinas, lord, I let him slip away,
He’s looking for that home and I hope he finds it,
But I’d trade all of my tomorrows for one single yesterday
To be holding bobby’s body next to mine.

Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose,
Nothing, that’s all that bobby left me, yeah,
But feeling good was easy, lord, when he sang the blues,
Hey, feeling good was good enough for me, hmm hmm,
Good enough for me and my bobby mcgee.

I heard this one in the car on the way home from work last night.

Wild World ~ Cat Stevens

Now that I've lost everything to you
You say you wanna start something new
And it's breakin' my heart you're leavin'
Baby, I'm grievin'
But if you wanna leave, take good care
I hope you have a lot of nice things to wear
But then a lot of nice things turn bad out there

Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world
It's hard to get by just upon a smile
Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world
I'll always remember you like a child, girl

You know I've seen a lot of what the world can do
And it's breakin' my heart in two
Because I never wanna see you a sad girl
Don't be a bad girl
But if you wanna leave, take good care
I hope you make a lot of nice friends out there
But just remember there's a lot of bad and beware

Chorus

Baby, I love you
But if you wanna leave, take good care
I hope you make a lot of nice friends out there
But just remember there's a lot of bad and beware

Chorus

For a change of pace, how about one of Captain Beefheart's jewels? This is called "Nowadays a Woman's Gotta Hit a Man."

Men you been lookin' all around for the women
But they always been right there
Nowadays a woman has to haul off and hit a man
T' make him know she's there
Other night a woman came up 'n hit me
Like I wasn't even there
Yeah, mmm dawned on me, man
That a man been doin' a woman unfair

Y' gotta wait for your woman
Let her know you're there
I knew I had to go out 'n tell all of the women
That I knew they were there
Now ev'rywhere I go the women all know that I know
Mmm, there ain't no other place to go but there
I'm talkin' about women
Yeah, I'm talkin' about women, man
They don't have to hit me
To make me know it's there
None o' my women have tears in their eyes
You can ask 'em about me I swear
'n they'll tell you
That's one man I swear
Yeah that's a man
'nuff about tellin' you this

Mmm, y' gotta wait for your woman

Let her know you're there
I knew I had to go out 'n tell all of the women
That I knew they were there
Now ev'rywhere I go the women all know

That I know

There ain't no, there ain't no other place to go but there

I'm talkin' about women
They don't have to hit me, man

To make me know it's there
None o' my women have tears in their eyes
You can ask 'em about me I swear

:) Eyes without a face-Billy Idol.

I'm all out of hope
One more bad dream could bring a fall
When I'm far from home
Don't call me on the phone
To tell me you're alone
It's easy to deceive
It's easy to tease
But hard to get release

Les yeux sans visage eyes without a face
Les yeux sans visage eyes without a face
Les yeux sans visage eyes without a face
Got no human grace your eyes without a face.

I spend so much time
Believing all the lies
To keep the dream alive
Now it makes me sad
It makes me mad at truth
For loving what was you

Les yeux sans visage eyes without a face
Les yeux sans visage eyes without a face
Les yeux sans visage eyes without a face
Got no human grace your eyes without a face.

When you hear the music you make a dip
Into someone else's pocket then make a slip.
Steal a car and go to Las Vegas oh, the gigolo pool.
I'm on a bus on a psychedelic trip
Reading murder books tryin' to stay hip.
I'm thinkin' of you you're out there so
Say your prayers.
Say your prayers.
Say your prayers.

Now I close my eyes
And I wonder why
I don't despise
Now all I can do
Is love what was once
So alive and new
But it's gone from your eyes
I'd better realise

Les yeux sans visage eyes without a face
Les yeux sans visage eyes without a face
Les yeux sans visage eyes without a face
Got no human grace your eyes without a face.
Such a human waste your eyes without a face
And now it's getting worse.
*Great music on this one.*

Artist: Skip James Lyrics
Song: Devil Got My Woman Lyrics

I'd rather be the devil, to be that woman man
I'd rather be the devil, to be that woman man
Aw, nothin' but the devil, changed my baby's mind
Was nothin' but the devil, changed my baby's mind

I laid down last night, laid down last night
I laid down last night, tried to take my rest
My mind got to ramblin', like a wild geese
From the west, from the west

The woman I love, woman that I loved
Woman I loved, took her from my best friend
But he got lucky, stoled her back again
And he got lucky, stoled her back agai
Nothing is more beautiful than something that will not last

Here's a song by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds were Nick Cave sings a duet with Kylie Minogue. This song starts out like a very romantic love song were they tell us their side of how the relationship starts...but the end reveals itself to be sort of twisted.

Where The Wild Roses Grow

Kylie:
Chorus:
They call me The Wild Rose
But my name was Elisa Day
Why they call me it I do not know
For my name was Elisa Day

Nick:
From the first day I saw her I knew she was the one
She stared in my eyes and smiled
For her lips were the colour of the roses
That grew down the river, all bloody and wild

Kylie:
When he knocked on my door and entered the room
My trembling subsided in his sure embrace
He would be my first man, and with a careful hand
He wiped at the tears that ran down my face

Chorus

Nick:
On the second day I brought her a flower
She was more beautiful than any woman I'd seen
I said, "Do you know where the wild roses grow
So sweet and scarlet and free?"

Kylie:
On the second day he came with a single red rose
Said: "Will you give me your loss and your sorrow"
I nodded my head, as I lay on the bed
He said, "If I show you the roses, will you follow?"

Chorus

Kylie:
On the third day he took me to the river
He showed me the roses and we kissed
And the last thing I heard was a muttered word
As he knelt (stood smiling) above me with a rock in his fist

Nick:
On the last day I took her where the wild roses grow
And she lay on the bank, the wind light as a thief
And I kissed her goodbye, said, "All beauty must die"
And lent down and planted a rose between her teeth

I really can't stand this group, but Adrien's post made me think of this song. This one starts out twisted right from the beginning though...

Used to Love Her ~ GNR

I used to love her, but I had to kill her
I used to love her, but I had to kill her
I had to put her
Six feet under
And I can still hear her complain

I used to love her, but I had to kill her
I used to love her, but I had to kill her
I knew I miss her
So I had to keep her
She's buried right in my back yard

I used to love her, but I had to kill her
I used to love her, but I had to kill her
She bitched so much
She drove me nuts
And now I'm happier this way

I used to love her, but I had to kill her
I used to love her, but I had to kill her
I had to put her
Six feet under
And I can still hear her complain

Chorus

When i was younger i played this record a lot because i love Bobbie Gentry's voice. I didn't "understand" the lyrics until i got older.

What do you get when you fall in love
A guy with a pin to burst your bubble
That's what you get for all your trouble
I'll never fall in love again
I'll never fall in love again

What do you get when you kiss a guy
You get enough germs to catch pneumonia
After you do, he'll never phone ya
I'll never fall in love again
I'll never fall in love again

Don't tell me what it's all about
'cause I've been there and I'm glad I'm out
Out of the chains, the chains that bind you
That is why I'm here to remind you

What do you get when you fall in love
You only get lies and pain and sorrow
So for at least until tomorrow
I'll never fall in love again
I'll never fall in love again

Don't tell me what it's all about
'cause I've been there and I'm glad I'm out
Out of the chains, the chains that bind you
That is why I'm here to remind you

What do you get when you give your heart
You get it all broken up and battered
That's what you get, a heart that's shattered
I'll never fall in love again
I'll never fall in love again

At one point in my life ,I really liked this band..but Ith's dislike of GnR reminded me of my dislike for Motley Crue and this song I used to love  :

You're All I Need

The blade of my knife
faced away from your heart
Those last few nights
it turned and sliced you apart

This love that i tell
Now feels lonely as hell
From this padded prison cell

So many times
i said you'd only be mine
i gave my blood and my tears
and loved you cyanide
when you took my lips
i took your breath
sometimes love is better of dead

You're all i need
Make you only mine
i loved you so i set you free
i had to take your life
You're all i need, you're all i need
And i loved you so, but you didn't love me

Laid out cold
now were both alone
But killin' you
helped me keep you at home
i guess it was bad
cause love can be sad
But we finally made the news

Tied up smiling
i thought you were happy
never opened your eyes
i thought you were napping
i got so much to learn
about love in this world
but we finally made the news

You're all i need make you only mine
i loved you so, so i put you to sleep

I Will Survive Lyrics
by Gloria Gaynor

First I was afraid
I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never live
without you by my side
But I spent so many nights
thinking how you did me wrong
I grew strong
I learned how to carry on
and so you're back
from outer space
I just walked in to find you here
with that sad look upon your face
I should have changed my stupid lock
I should have made you leave your key
If I had known for just one second
you'd be back to bother me

Go on now go walk out the door
just turn around now
'cause you're not welcome anymore
weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye
you think I'd crumble
you think I'd lay down and die
Oh no, not I
I will survive
as long as i know how to love
I know I will stay alive
I've got all my life to live
I've got all my love to give
and I'll survive
I will survive

It took all the strength I had
not to fall apart
kept trying hard to mend
the pieces of my broken heart
and I spent oh so many nights
just feeling sorry for myself
I used to cry
Now I hold my head up high
and you see me
somebody new
I'm not that chained up little person
still in love with you
and so you felt like dropping in
and just expect me to be free
now I'm saving all my loving
for someone who's loving me

A non-morbid entry:

Montana (by Frank Zappa, from "Overnite Sensation")

I might be moving to Montana soon
just to raise me up a crop of dental floss
raising it up
WAXING it down...
in a little white box that i can sell up town
by myself i wouldn't have no boss
but i'd be r a i s i n g my lonely dental FLOSS
(raising my lonely dental floss)

well i just might grow me some bees
but i'd leave
the sweet
stuff
for somebody else...

but then on the other hand i'd keep THE WAX
and MELT it d
o
w
n
pluck some floss AND swish it around
I'd have me a c ro p
and it would be on TOP

That's why i'm moving to montana
moving to MONTANA soon...
gonna be a dental floss tycoon
MOVING TO montana SOON...
GONNA BE A MENTAL FLOSS FLYCOON

I'm gonna buy me a horse
just about THIS big...
and ride him all along the border line
WITH A PAIR OF HEAVY DUTY ZIRCON-INCRUSTED TWEEZERS
in my hand
Every other wrangler would say i was mighty grand
by myself i would'nt
have NO boss
b u t i ' d b e r a i s i n g m y l o n e l y
DENTAL-FLOSS

{raising MY lonely DENTAL floss)

Well i might ride along
the border with my tweezers
gleaming in the moon
lighty light

And then i'd get
a cup of COFFEE...
and give my foot a push

JUST ME AND THE PIGMY PONY
over by the dental floss bush

AND then I might j u s t jump back on
and ride like a cowboy into the dawn to Montana

[MOVING TO MONTANA SOON / yippee-yi-yo-ty-yay]
