I wore out Bookends when it came out. I don't have it on my iPod, though I have several songs from it from a few live performances.

Great poetry on that album. Epsecially in Old Friends and a Hazy Shade of Winter (that's I've been listening to also these past few weeks as the season changes and I - as I've said - have been feeling my age.)

"Can you imagine us
Years from today,
Sharing a park bench quietly?
How terribly strange
To be seventy.
Old friends,
Memory brushes the same years
Silently sharing the same fears"

"Ahhh, seasons change with the scenery
Weaving time in a tapestry
Wont you stop and remember me
At any convenient time
Funny how my memory slips while looking over manuscripts
Of unpublished rhyme
Drinking my vodka and lime

But look around, leaves are brown now
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter
Look around, leaves are brown
Theres a patch of snow on the ground..."

Very melencholy - and yet affirming in an odd way.
"Willoughby. Next stop is Willoughby."

"How terribly strange to be seventy".

Well, Paul Simon has 5 years from today to find out first hand. Today is Paul Simon's 65th b-day.

It's hard to believe. He doesn't seem 65.

I saw them on May 2nd, the day the new album came out, at the Paramount (a very nice theater in Seattle) middle section 2nd balcony. That was quite an experience. And just recently at the Gorge. In all I've seen them 9 times (niiine tiiimes).

For those of you who aren't in the pacific NW (all of you I think) here is a picture of the Gorge. It's out in the middle of nowhere on the Columbia River gorge (get it?) and quite the place to see a show:

The Gorge is great. I saw Pantera there several years ago while visiting family.
Tool puts on a great show. I used to have a crush on Maynard.

I love new bands' names.

Amusment Parks on Fire
Trespassers William (from Winnie the Pooh of course).

I also liked Veruka Salt (from willie Wonka) and Dashboard Confessional.

One night when we were feeling kind of goofy, I was making up band names with my two youngest. Theri favorites were Washroom Escalator and Barstool Hernia.

How did I miss this Tool conversation? I've been trying to see them in concert for I don't know how many years (a few years after Undertow) Unfortunately, like many other southern-US based bands, they include no more than 3 or 4 Canadian cities on each tour (A mark they may have broken by a few, maybe, so don't quote me on that). I came on to revive this older topic, so, gushing over Tool will be put aside for now.

I am going to be driving for about 14-15 hours to see Camera Obscura (the indie band from Glasgow, not the punk band from the states who stole their name) at La Sala Rossa in Montreal on the 29th. I've been looking forward to this for a long time, as Camera Obscura have long graced my top-three list. They have such a beautiful mix of melodic guitar & keyboard, jazzy rhythm section, and airy vocal harmonies. Some lyrics for my friends:

Camera Obscura - I don't do crowds

I'd like to have company during thunderstorms
I'd like you to fall for me but it'd soon turn lousy and wrong
I meant what I said
All I want is to be one of the best

Been getting some extra help from a special band
Oh, yeah they've been helping us out and we're thankful they're lending a hand
Here is my request:
Play the ones that we all know the best

I don't do crowds
everyone put it down to rudeness
I laughed out loud
could they all see that it was madness?
Please come to save me from myself again
To shield me, to disguise
Oh my heart has a secret
and this will make you sigh
and me cry

Oh will there be dancing in the hall tonight?
Cause if there is dancing, I won't lack fight
It seems I'm less afraid of life itself than of what you see

You turned the heads of every boy and girl alike
Would you have them all if there were enough hours in the night?
You took care of your skin
Sure did help but it didn't solve everything

I don't do crowds
everyone put it down to rudeness
I laughed out loud
could they all see that it was madness?
Please come to save me from myself again
To shield me, to disguise
Oh my heart has a secret
and this will make you sigh
and me cry

I find it funny that you never even knew
all the times when I stole a look from you
Oh they're gonna put me away this time
I'd rather be a gear in a big, deterministic, physical machine than just some random swerving.
