Custom Avatars

#1 Post by 52FM » Sat Sep 17, 2005 2:53 pm

Ok - now that I figured out smilies I'm thinking of putting an avatar in - but not one of the ones in the gallery. Assuming I have a gif image the proper size and dimensions on my computer - how do I get that to be my avatar? Does it have to be from a website, as the instructions indicate? It won't upload one from my computer?

I think its great for people to use photobucket etc for external icons.
What bugs me though is that some people use inordinately large files for icons for example a 150k file when it if was resized to 25k or 10k it would be much better.
The forum resizes icons to be 140x140 or something regardless of size
if larger than that but if the filesize is really large it slows down forum page loading
for people on slower connections. So I would ask people who have really
large files for icons to please size them down! Thanks!

Anyone who wants their image resized, send me a message and we'll arrange it. Or if you have an image you want an icon made, I can do that too."

I'm the offender. I apologize...it was done out of ignorance, not malice.

AHA! I KNEW IT! BRAND HIM WITH A SCARLETT (no pun intended) A for Avatar something or other. . . :o

Actually its not just you but a few more people that I noticed. There may be more than just those as well. I'm not going around policing it anything its just when an icon looks different I check it out of curiosity. So I'm just asking people out of courtesy to the board if they know about it to fix it. And thanks to johnmonkey for offering to help out with that!

There are people who don't understand how file size and images relate. I suppose many of us have been to a few personal web pages, where the guygirl obviously thought that resizing the picture in their web page editor would make it "smaller" and have a smaller file size. Aaaargh."

Hi. I've been really busy the last couple months relocating and haven't spent much time here. What caused these errors? Were you trying to upload the avatars? I have uploading of avatars disabled currently.

Ooops I was wrong! Uploading of avatars is enabled!
However the limit is 25k size and 140x140 dimensions.
Did yours go over any of those limits?

I tried it again and got the same thing.
It's 100x100 and 3.81 kilobytes."

Ok when I have time which is when I dont know but I'll look into it.
I can email you the site ftp info if you want to put them up there and I can then upload them directly and that will save time.

By the way I took care of that guy who stuck your image on an avatar and posted an inappropriate post. If he comes back to the forum and behaves then ok but if not... Let me know.
