Japanese Culture on youtube

#1 Post by Suntory » Wed Jul 04, 2007 4:57 pm

I've been spending some time on youtube and have found a lot of videos made by
non-japanese people (aka japanophiles?!).
They are either lipsycing to popular Japanese music tunes

(she's really good at it too!)

or speaking japanese to who I don't know, etc.

Then there are clips from Japanese tv shows and this one which reminds
me of the arcade where Charlotte saw the guitar player guy and the
drumming dancing guy:

I love those Tommy Lee Jones coffee commercials. I posted some of them in another thread here.

I know quite a few japanophiles. An old friend of mine can sing a ton of old jpop songs and stuff just by memory, without knowing what she's saying (is this girl in the video actually singing, and just not mic'd?), and I have another friend who somehow taught himself most of the language fundamentals on his own.
I'd rather be a gear in a big, deterministic, physical machine than just some random swerving.

Well, I think pretending to do Karaoke is silly too, but it doesn't bother me. There are people who think stuff I like to do like play Dance Dance Revolution or Settlers of Catan are stupid, and their opinions are just as valid. I guess what I'm saying is that when someone gets enjoyment out of something I don't care for or understand, it doesn't damage their credibility, because they probably see me the same way.
