One that's really easy to have missed is "Tempest" 1982, with John Cassavetes, Gena Rowlands, Raul Julia and others. It may leave many cold but I've re-watched it several times and really enjoy it.

I recently saw Avatar . I agree with most reviewers; it's an epic retelling of Walt Disney's Pocahontas , and it's all spectacle ... but still a pretty incredible experience.
