Somewhere I read a post stating that people who see a movie more than once need to get a life. I guess that makes me pretty pitiful. I love a good movie. I don't consider myself a movie expert by any means, and, to tell the truth, I really haven't seen movies that I probably should have seen. I recently went through a two year period in which I did not see a single movie. I didn't plan it; it just happened that way. Here are some movies I have seen a number of times:

Lost in Translation
The Sure Thing
Animal House
The Big Chill
Annie Hall
Manhattan
Hannah and Her Sisters
Radio Days
Star Wars
High Tide
Smiles of a Summer Night
Through a Glass Darkly
Chinatown
The Guns of Navarone
The Great Escape
From Russia With Love
The Lady Vanishes
Holy Grail
Young Frankenstein

Nice idea for a thread, Congruous ! Ok, in terms of sheer number of plays, this would be my list. These aren't the movies I consder to be the "best", just the ones I play over and over, and come back to repeatedly:

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Fight Club
Persona (but I liked "Through a Glass Darkly", as well)
Airplane!
Groundhog Day
The Magnificent Ambersons
Lost in Translation

There are a few others that don't pop into mind immediately, but that's the short list.

OK - this is strictly from memory and I'm sure I'll forget many but...

all 3 LOTR (I thought I'd get that one out of the way first)
Godfather I and II
Dances with Wolves
Field of Dreams
Trains, Planes, Automobiles
Matrix Trilogy
Blues Brothers (can't be a Chicagoan without this being on the list)
Brian's Song (OK - does it count? It was made for TV, but did have a short run in the theaters in Chicago at least; can't be a Bear's fan without this one)
Gone With the Wind (well, maybe not the whole thing start to finish each time)
Casablanca
It's a Wonderful Life (at least once a year)
Dr. Zhivago (see GWTW)
Dr. Strangelove
Wizard of Oz (has to be the most times ever seeing one movie)
2001 (several times in the theaters and now on dvd)
Woodstock (at least 10 times in the theaters)
Star Wars - New Hope (the original Star Wars - now called Episode 3)

Probably missing several - but that covers a wide enough range of movie styles.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail used to be the movie I had seen the most, until Lost in Translation.

Those are probably my only two double digit movies. Some others in no particular order:

Before Sunrise/Sunset
Mystery Train
Prince of Darkness

I get addicted to watching a movie and will run them into the ground until watching that movie is completely feelingless experience, sadly. Some now dead to me are

Emma
Sense and Sensibility
Practical Magic
Roxanne

I deliberately avoid this with LIT.

I forgot "Roxanne." I've seen it at least 10 times. It's one of the few Steve Martin movies I really enjoy.

Hey Ith - I was looking forward to seeing your response to this thread. We know about Eternal Sunshine and Magnolia; probably LiT also. But how about any others that you watch over and over again ove rthe years.

By the way - let me add one I forgot: Gangs of New York. A compelling story, since my FiL (gone 16 years this week) grew up as the one of the few Irish families in an Italian neighborhood in Chicago. Learned to fight at an early age; learned to really show his love at a late age - but better late than never. I loved him deeply and he is with me in spirit very often.

I think I'll have to add Dodgeball to my list.

It's been on HBO all month long and I think I've watched it like every other day...I don't know why...it's so funny, but still..I don't know why I can't seem to change the station whenever it's on.

i watch almost all movies at least twice, unless they're absolutely useless, but ones i watch more than the rest are:

usual suspects
pulp fiction
raging bull
fight club
back to the future
amelie
matrix (1st one only)
se7en
blade runner
leon
mulholland dr
goodfellas
oldboy
donnie darko
american beauty
star wars (eps 4 and 5)

incidentally my all time favourite movies list. loads more but these are the most prominent atm. might i ask of anyone why they keep coming back to their particular movies as well? just curious to know what ppl look for in movies. recently usual suspects and lost in translation have dominated my time, lost in translation i'm sure everyone here understands why, and usual suspects because it's the perfect movie in every respect (storytelling, visuals, script, score, acting...obv IMO only)

Lately, I've been watching Donnie Darko and Fight Club alot. Donnie Darko is fascinating

. I also have to add The 40 Year Old Virgin to my list. The movie is raunchy but I can't stop laughing everytime I see it!
